Dutasteride under the US brand name Avodart is used for the effective treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) in men which is the enlargement of prostate. As a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, Dutasteride prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is responsible for BPH and male pattern baldness when present in excess levels in the body. It improves BPH symptoms like difficulty in urination, excess frequency of urination, and discomfort. Generic Avodart (Dutasteride) is also recommended for off-label use as a treatment for male pattern baldness in the vertex area of the scalp.
